Matter, Mixtures, Minerals, oh! my!

I can't believe a whole MONTH of school has gone by!  We have been busy learning about physical properties of matter (5th and 6th grade), mixtures and solutions (fifth grade), physical properties of minerals (sixth grade), and learning about science superheros who have definitely made an impact in our world, like Adam Steltzner, Jane Goodall, and just this past Friday Robert Goddard.  We even had some unexpected science superheros visit our sixth grade classes, Mickey Metal, Nancy Non-Metal, and Mario Metalloid.  The visitors helped us to learn the physical properties of metals, non-metals, and metalloids, and where they are located on the periodic table.

We will be having our unit test this THURSDAY, October 4th!!  So, make sure you study!!!

So, how do you separate mixtures?  Well, depending on the physical properties of the substances involved separation could involve, using magnets, tongs, evaporation, etc., but sometimes you just have to do it manually.  The picture above shows students separating a mixture of rice and safety pins.  It is a little harder than you think, and yes, well I might have blind folded them too.  :)

I have really enjoyed getting to know the individuals that make up my six classes, and I attended my first GP football game this past month.  Go WILDCATS!!  :)
